What is massage for people living with cancer?

Massage helps clients with cancer to reduce anxiety, pain, nausea, fatigue, depression, muscular tension, and emotional stress. This modality may be used in all the various stages of cancer (terminal, recovery, chemo, radiation, and survivor). To do this successfully requires theoretical knowledge and technical skills that go beyond what is usually taught in massage schools. Therapists need to be knowledgeable not only in the pathology and physiology aspects of the disease, but with the specific indications and contraindications. Oncology massage may include several techniques, some of which are Swedish massage, hot stone therapy, reflexology, lymphatic therapy and accupressure points.
