What
is massage for TMD/TMJ?
|
|
Massage can be very beneficial
as a complement to dental care in the treatment of Temporomandibular
Disorders (TMD), which is commonly referred to as TMJ.
Massage therapy for TMD must be well designed to be
effective, and includes the systematic and careful attention
to the facial muscles, the muscles of chewing and the
muscles of the head and neck. Treatment generally requires
both extraoral and intraoral work. Gentleness and minimization
of discomfort are paramount in the therapy.
Good candidates for TMD massage therapy treatment are:
- patients with pain originating from the muscle of
the face, head or neck
- patients with muscle spasm or muscle tension causing
TMD symptoms
- patients with headaches due to muscle tension.
